BIG FUN

By | March 12, 2023

We gathered on the evening of March 9th with our club “Big Fun” builds for a spot of competitive friendly banter and to be awarded marks for our creations not out of 10, but 8! Organiser Sec. Simon has kindly prepared a short script of the evening which is reproduced below. “Strange” you might think that Simon received the top marking but, in your scribe’s view, it was well deserved, an excellent build!

Simon writes………..

The first of our BIG FUN winter club model competitions was held at Carey Hall on the 9th of March 2023.

The models were purchased in October 2022, and constructed in the interim period.

Eleven models were sold and eight made it to the start line.

The first event was a Concours d’Elegance, with each model being judged by all members in four different categories.

All members present voted, but builders were not supposed to vote for their own!

Quite a few were sporting a number of modifications, mainly to the tail sections as per photographs.

The next event will be a “Test Day”, when all models will be invited to take part in a trimming and test flying session, once the weather is suitable.

The first flying competition will be timed flight, and then another six events spread out throughout the year,

So the scores so far:

Simon 8

Roly      7

Pete      6

Keith    5

Phil      4

Fuzz    3

Brian    2

Dave     1

Thanks to Dave for the photos, Phil for the judging criteria and Keith for the scoring.

Early days yet, but hopefully the future events will inject even more BIG FUN into our flying sessions!

Like Norway, your scribe was awarded a mere single point, which I thought most mean. That said, my example was the least complete so maybe I should consider myself lucky to at least acquire the “un point”; must try harder! Perhaps I spent too much time designing and 3D printing my 11 cylinder radial cowl! Nine cylinders are so 2022……..

One point of interest for me was the range of modifications made to the airframes, lengthened fuselage, tailplane area, control surface area, ic v’s electric, structural mods, to name but a few. What it does demonstrate is the knowledge and confidence base of the builders to know how to trim and change a design to suit their own personal requirements – built up over too many years perhaps!!
