2023 BMFA Record Attempt

By | May 15, 2023

It was proposed by the BMFA that members across the UK come together at 12 noon on the 14th May and attempt to collectively set a new record for the greatest number of model aircraft of all types in the air at one time.

In 2022 a similar event was one of a number celebrating the BMFA/SMAE Centenary. A new BMFA national absolute record was achieved with 3109 model aircraft and drones in the air at 263 flying sites across the UK. By popular demand the BMFA launched a further event this year with the aim to “smash both the number of aircraft in the air” but also the number of BMFA flying site locations.

The post below records our Phoenix Model Flying Club (Dorset) support for this record attempt.

The ‘Band of Eleven’!

Similar the 2022, the day dawned a little on the misty side but at least it wasn’t raining and blowing a gale! Before long, the sun broke through and all looked good weather wise – and to everyone’s delight, it pretty much remained that way!

The event ran as well as anyone dared hope and a joyful time was had by all who could make it to ‘the patch’ – and no mid-air’s – on this occasion!

Local organisation for the day was, as per last year, expertly headed up by committee member Phil with Barry at his side managing the timing; grateful thanks are owed for the smooth running of the event. Phil prepared a short report and it appears below. A small number of following images provide a photographic record of the day.

Phil writes…………….

It was an excellent flying day today with wonderful weather. We had eleven aircraft in the air, taking part in the BMFA record attempt. All went off ok with no incidents to report. We had two ‘oilys’ and three gliders with the remainder made up of electric which included Peter’s float plane!

Roly treated us to an exciting display of his new foam board F22. It went off like a rocket from the start, a couple of clicks of right trim and it flew with style and grace, performing low level passes at full bore like a true professional. The second flight was a little more tricky as the sky had turned grey and the F22 seemed to become invisible!…. Landed safely through.

Good performance with the jets from Peter and Graham, it was a great day….

A walk around the pits……..

Adrian and Phil take it easy!

Barry receiving a little tuition from Phil – whilst Graham concentrates on landing his Pulse XT60…..

Which he expertly does…..as easily as 1, 2, 3!

……and not forgetting Roly’s foamboard F-22 rocket ship!!
