Phoenix 2.3m Glider Competition – Geoff reports…

By | June 13, 2019

For the first 2.3 comp of 2019, the weather was looking very iffy and I think most members would have thought that it would be cancelled (I nearly made that decision!) but over the years have found that no sooner do you cancel and out comes the sun! So I went ahead.

I was last to arrive, Darren and Roly were already set up and waiting to do test flights. I joined them as my plane was out on its maiden flight, well the fuz and tail feather’s were that Darren’s very kindly built for me. The the wing, well, that’s a bit like the old broom, 3 new heads and two new handles. The spar is original as are some of the ribs and bit of the trailing edge, but I still think of it as one of Pete’s first of ten planes he built; preowned by Mr Ron Bean and powered by a Axi motor from Malcolm truly a club plane!!!

As for the comp, we waited for anyone else to arrive but with the  weather looking iffy it was down to us three to commence the comp.

Roly v’s Geoff   ………………….. Winner – Geoff!

Darren v’s Roly………………….. Winner – Roly!

Geoff v’s Darren………………… Winner – Darren!

We had a second round………….

Darren v’s Geoff………………… Winner – Darren!

Roly v’s Darren………………….. Winner – Darren!

Roly V Geoff…………………… Winner – Geoff!

Conditions were now looking poor and rain spots were evident, so we called it a day there.

Results as follows          Darren 3 points/ wins

                                           Geoff    2points/wins

                                           Roly       1 point/win

Thanks for coming but, those who would like to join in, all the help will be given to get you under way and enjoy a very enjoyable competition; it has been running way before I joined the club. The Phoenix 2000 can also be used but the span is restricted to 2.3m and a height limiter is used to cut the motor at 150 m altitude. If it’s your first time trying this event and you don’t have a height limiter, I am sure we can work something out to get you started in the 2.3m event. If you become hooked, then buying a height limiter will level every one’s launch height and, as there are similar comps around Dorset that use the height limiter, you will be eligible to enter!

Next 2.3m competition is Saturday 15th June (weather permitting!), briefing 10am with flying to get underway when everyone is ready.
